HMF FitKids In School
It's time to give kids a running start to better health - and better lives.
The HMF FitKids In School, operated by the Hartford Marathon Foundation, is designed to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle in middle school students grades 4th thru 8th. We cordially invite CT schools to be a part of the program at no cost to your school.
The program is a voluntary, goal-oriented running program. Over a five-week period, students run together before, during or after school to accumulate 12 miles or 25 miles. Then they come together with students from middle schools around Connecticut for the culminating “Final Mile” run to complete their marathon (26.2 miles) or half marathon (13.1). All students will cross over a magnificent finish line complete with music, announcers and cheering spectators. A commemorative Finisher's Medal will be given to each child to celebrate their accomplishment. Special fitness activities, healthy snacks, and T-shirts are included for each child.
The 2016 HMF FitKids In School is open to middle schools throughout central Connecticut. 2016 is the first year we have been able to offer this program in both the Spring and Fall seasons. Our inaugural Spring “Final Mile” event will be held on May 10, 2016 at Walnut Hill Park in New Britain. Our annual Fall “Final Mile” event will be held at Rentschler Field in East Hartford on October 25, 2016. Both locations provide easy access and plenty of parking. We provide training materials, bus transportation, shirts, medals, snacks and activities.
Following their final mile, students explore the World Of Fitness. World Of Fitness is a fun, interactive, health and fitness themed expo where students will participate in games, activities, and demonstrations that encourage healthy lifestyles. Past exhibitors have included Bruce Brazeal with Move Better Athletics, Oakwood soccer clinic, boot camp, West Harford Yoga, and Zumba, to name a few. Each helped make it a great experience for our children.
More than 15,000 kids have participated and collectively run over 255,000 miles in the HMF FitKids In School Program since it began.
In 2015, 32 Connecticut schools participated with over 2,400 4th – 8th grade students committed to getting healthy and staying fit. We look forward to hosting these students again in 2016 and congratulating them on accomplishing their goal. We look forward to working with you to achieve a healthy, active future for our kids.
