ING Run for Something Better
The ING Run For Something Better Program, operated by the Hartford Marathon Foundation, is designed to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle in middle school students grades 6th thru 8th. We cordially invite CT schools to be a part of the program at no cost to your school.
The program is a voluntary, goal-oriented running program. Over a six-week period, students run together before, during or after school to accumulate 12 to 25 miles. Then, in early October, they come together with students from middle schools around Connecticut for the culminating “Final Mile” run to complete their half-marathon (13.1 miles) or their marathon (26.2 miles). All students will cross over a magnificent finish line complete with music, announcers and cheering spectators. A commemorative Finisher's Medal will be given to each child to celebrate their accomplishment. Special fitness activities, healthy snacks, and T-shirts are included for each child.
The 2013 ING Run for Something Better program is open to middle schools throughout central Connecticut. The “Final Mile” event will be held at Rentschler Field in East Hartford on October 8th. This location provides easy access and plenty of parking. We provide training materials, bus transportation, shirts, medals, snacks and activities.
Students will explore the World Of Fitness presented by the YMCA of Greater Hartford. World Of Fitness is a fun, interactive, health and fitness themed expo where students will participate in games, activities, and demonstrations that encourage healthy lifestyles. Exhibitors such as Bruce Brazeal with Move Better Athletics, Sonic Endurance, Five Star Soccer Academy, Cross Fit, West Harford Yoga, and Zumbatronics, to name a few, will help make it a great experience for our children.
More than 7,500 kids have participated and collectively run over 142,000 miles in the ING Run For Something Better Hartford program since it began.
Over 32 Connecticut schools will participate in this year’s program with over 2,500 4th – 8th grade students committed to getting healthy and staying fit. We look forward to hosting these student on October 8th and congratulating them on accomplishing their goal. We look forward to working with you to achieve a healthy, active future for our kids.
Dear Fellow Athlete,
It's time to help give kids a running start to better health — and better lives. As an athlete, you know the importance of physical fitness. And you understand the journey toward a healthier, longer life begins with a single step. Now, there's a unique opportunity for you to pass on those values, and help introduce a new generation to an active lifestyle.
Join in the race against childhood obesity by donating $10 or more, and you'll receive a bright pair of orange shoelaces as a token of our appreciation and a symbol of your support for youth running and fitness. Please wear them proudly to show you are “tied” to supporting kids’ fitness! And when you wear them, you help spread awareness of a serious problem – childhood obesity– and one nonprofit organization’s solution, making fitness opportunities available and exciting.
Your contribution will help ING Run For Something Better continue to introduce children right here in Connecticut to free, school-based running and fitness programs. Please show your support today.
There are three ways to get your orange laces:
- Donate $10 or more when you register for your event, and receive your signature orange laces as a token of our appreciation. Only one pair of orange laces will be received per donation, regardless of donation amount.
- Donate $10 or more for your orange laces at any of the pre-Marathon packet pickup locations.
