ING Hartford Marathon Aims to be
Most Sustainable Athletic Event

The ING Hartford Marathon expects more than 10,000 runners to enjoy autumn in New England by participating in its marathon, half-marathon, team relay, 5K, and Kids K events. The marathon course offers breathtaking views of the Connecticut River while showcasing Hartford's revitalized riverfront and neighborhoods.

United Technologies Corporation, longtime sponsor of the Hartford Marathon will continue its support by becoming a presenting sponsor for the 2008 race, and by expanding its focus on innovative ways to make the ING Hartford Marathon “greener”.

The water bubbler designed and built by UTC engineers and powered by Vital Water saved 10,000 plastic bottles from the local landfill in 2007.

The race has also taken the following actions:
- Only organic food served at race events
- Recycling at all events
- An environmentally friendly purchasing policy
- Reusable race bags
ING and race organizers are working with presenting sponsor United Technologies to become the most sustainable athletic event in the country.

The ING Hartford Marathon has been selected as one of five seedling races in the U.S. by The Council for Responsible Sport (CRS) to take part in a pilot program which will establish standards and processes for a sustainability certification for athletic events. Hartford’s Biggest “Green” Weekend Ever!
The ING Hartford Marathon will team up with the OneThing™ Expo: Home of a Million OneThings, part of Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell’s OneThing energy conservation campaign. This spectacular show will feature hundreds of exhibitors. "The Expo will give individuals, businesses and families a socially conscious "experience" that is stimulating and imaginative." |
