Become an Official Charity

Thank you for visiting this page which underscores our commitment to fundraising.  The application period to be considered as a 2010 ING Hartford Marathon Official Charity has not opened.  Please check back in March for program changes and application process.

If you are a charity wishing to have the designation Official ING Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon Charity, the following criteria must be met:

  • Qualify for IRS exempt status under section 501(c)(3).
  • Provide 25 volunteers for the event and designate one person to work with our volunteer coordinator as a point of contact for your volunteers.
  • Refund the entry fee of each runner who raises over $300 for your charity and decides not to opt-out and allow the charity to keep the entry fee. Entry fees vary from $20 to $100 depending on the specific race entered (Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K) and the date registered.

In return for the Official Charity designation, the Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF) will provide the following:

  • Your logo, short description of your organization and contact information displayed on our website in the charity running section. Notice of the registration fee refund program on our website and in other promotional materials.
  • Opportunity to be showcased on the Charity Spotlight page on our website.
  • Use of our VIP area on race day for all runners who are fundraising on your behalf. VIP area is called “Charity Village” and includes a large shelter (tent), separate portalets, pre-race food and various gifts and giveaways for charity runners.
  • Use of web-based software to create fundraising pages. charity web page to the online fundraising center will be available.  You can view an example at www.activegiving.com
  • Accounting for all funds raised by charity runners. All donations will flow through the HMF office for tallying.
  • Refund processing through the HMF office. At the end of the race season, HMF will invoice your organization for whatever refunds have been made to your runners.
  • Runners who participate in raising funds for charity on behalf of our Official Charities will be able to create web pages for online fundraising. Donations raised offline must be handled according to procedures stated at hartfordmarathon.com. Failure to follow the instructions could result in improper accounting and failure to qualify for a refund.

If you would like to be considered as an official charity in 2010, please do the following:

  1. Download and sign the standard agreement form (Pending - available in March 2010)
  2. Make a copy of the document showing your organization has acquired IRS exempt status under section 501(c)(3).
  3. Mail or fax the documentation to:
