FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

At HMF and CityStrides, we understand that the We Run CT Challenge might feel a bit complex, but what might make it complex, makes this challenge so special! To answer some of the questions you might have, we’ve divided them up into the following three categories:

SIGNUP FAQS

Where do I find my access code?

Your CityStrides We Run CT Challenge access code is located in your Hartford Marathon Foundation registration confirmation email.

Do I have to accomplish a certain number of streets each day?

NO! You can run or walk as many streets/miles as you want each day, it’s up to you! Just register for the event, join the challenge on the CityStrides site, and then help our Community conquer Connecticut!

What if I don’t have a GPS watch or Smartphone?

Unfortunately, this challenge requires mapping your activities using a GPS compatibility device, see Toolkit for compatible devices.

PRIVACY FAQS

Will my CityStride privacy settings impact my data in the challenge?

Yes and no. Regardless of your privacy setting, any activity recorded in Connecticut during the challenge window will support your position on the individual leaderboard, and support the community’s cumulative efforts. However, depending on the setting your chose, your visibility on the Community Map will be impacted, see below for details:

  • “Everyone” – Your GPS route data will be visible on the Interactive Community Map.
  • “Just Me” – Your GPS route data will not be visible on the Interactive Community Map.
  • “Per Activity” – Your GPS route data’s visibility will default to the privacy setting in your respective tracking service. You can change this activity’s privacy setting in CityStrides by editing it.

LEADERBOARD FAQS

How do I complete a street?

Every street in CityStrides is broken up into a certain number of nodes (or checkpoints) depending on how long it may be. In order to finish a street, you must run or walk past each one of these nodes before it is marked as completed.

What does “Progressed Streets” mean?

An entire street does not need to be completed in one activity to be counted. Progressed streets is a helpful statistic made visible on your personal CityStrides profile page that highlights streets that were not completely accomplished during an activity, but were only partially completed or possibly even just touched. This metric is helpful when completing larger streets, as it may take more than one activity to complete their entire length.

How do I know which streets haven’t been completed yet?

Visit the We Run CT CityStride Dashboard, then use the interactive community map to navigate to an area of Connecticut that you are interested in completing to see if it’s already been accomplished. A purple line will indicate an activity completed by a challenge member and therefore show which streets have already been checked off.

How can I find streets to run?

You can view a complete list of all 169 towns and their associated streets on the CityStrides Connecticut page. If you’re focusing on a single town, find it on the list, then click the associated “Go” button to see the streets in that town.

If I only run part of a street, then complete it later, or someone else does, will it still count?

Yes and Yes!

What happens if I run or walk outside of Connecticut?

Only streets completed in the 169 Connecticut towns will count towards the Individual and Community streets and town leaderboards. In addition, only the mileage from activities that originate in Connecticut, will count towards your distance totals. Any manually entered activity will not be supported by the challenge.

Does my historical data on CityStrides count?

No. Only activities that are completed between Monday, June 2 and Sunday, June 8 will be counted towards the Community Goals and Individual Challenges. All of your historical data and data collected during the Challenge will still be available in your personal CityStrides account.

If you register and join the Challenge after June 2, any activity tracked during the Challenge window will still count towards your progress.

What types of activities are eligible?

Activities must be categorized as running or walking in your tracking service.

Does trail running or hiking count?

No. This challenge is focused on the streets of Connecticut. That said, if your trail activity touches a Connecticut street (you’ve gotta get there somehow), then that street and town will count towards your progress, plus the entire distance of the activity will be added.

How do my activities get into CityStrides?

Activity syncing is a bit different for each service:

  • Coros: When you save your data from your device to their service, they alert CityStrides of the new activity & it syncs in immediately and automatically.
  • Garmin: When you save your data from your device to their service, they alert CityStrides of the new activity & it syncs in immediately and automatically.
  • MapMyFitness: When you save your activity in their app, they alert CityStrides of the new activity & it syncs in immediately and automatically.
  • Runkeeper: There is no automatic/immediate alerting, so you can either wait for the daily sync of your account or you can choose “Sync Now” in the top right menu.
  • Strava: When you save your activity in their app, they alert CityStrides of the new activity & it syncs in immediately and automatically.
  • Suunto: When you save your data from your device to their service, they alert CityStrides of the new activity & it syncs in immediately and automatically.

How are all of these stats calculated?

Community stats are calculated as follows:

  • People: Total number of people signed up, regardless of whether or not they have completed any streets
  • Streets: Total number of unique streets collectively completed by all participants (if two people complete Aspinall Drive in Andover, it gets counted once)
  • Cities: Total number of unique cities where someone has completed at least one street
  • Distance: Total distance traveled by everyone who has progressed any street
  • Recent Activity: When you visit the page, the 10 most recent activities are displayed and the list is updated live as soon as an wearable is synced with CityStrides – only activities that complete streets are included in this list

Standings stats are calculated as follows:

  • Streets: Total number of streets completed by the participant, regardless of whether anyone else has completed the same streets
  • Cities: Total number of cities where the participant has completed at least one street
  • Distance: Total distance traveled by the participant based on progressed streets
